Peggy at US Capitol

Just One Name, Like Cher

That’s me, Pegg, floating in front of the U.S. Capitol. That’s right: two Gs in my name, like the Snoop formerly known as Dogg.

I’m a proud New Jersey native: half Irish (the good side) and half Italian (the other good side). Now I live in Washington, D.C. I’m a journalist, lawyer and former tour guide. That means my experience is broad: I’ve defended poor people accused of felonies and helped tourists find clean restrooms. Talk about two groups of desperate souls.

I’ve been doing satire since at least 7th grade, when I changed the lyrics of “The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde” into “The Paddle of Priests and Nuns.” Sr. Aquinas was not amused. My friends were, though, which only encouraged me.

My Italian grandmother was one of my greatest influences and the source of my personal motto. “My little-a Peggy,” she’d whisper in my ear, “always-a remember: ‘Mai fidarsi di un autista del bus nudo.'” It’s advice that has kept me out of a lot of jams, so I pass it forward to future generations: “Never trust a naked bus driver.”

Regarding the T-shirt I’m wearing in this picture. It says, “Hey, ladies, this could be you.” Sorry, ladies, it’s an old one, and I’m off the market now.
